Binodini Das, popularly known as Noti Binodini, is a Bengali actor and a theatre icon from 19th century Bengal. Actor Kangana Ranaut is all set to essay the role of Noti Binodini in the upcoming Hindi film directed by Parineeti fame Pradip Sarkar.

The upcoming biopic film is written by Prakash Kapadia who has penned films like Black, Devdas, Tanhaji, and Padmavat, among others.

Who is Noti Binodini?

Born into a family of sex workers, Noti Binodini began her career at the age of 12 as a courtesan, and played her first serious drama role at the same age in Calcutta's National Theatre in 1874, under the mentorship of its founder and the legendary Bengali actor and filmmaker Girish Chandra Ghosh. He is known as the maker of the golden age of Bengali theatre.

In a career spanning over 12 years, Noti Binodini performed 80 remarkable roles including Pramila, Sita, Draupadi, Radha, Ayesha, Kaikeyi, Motibibi, and Kapalkundala, among others. While she had violated every rule of feminine smritikatha, her writings were quite often questioned by society. During her career, Bengal’s religious leader and saint Ramakrishna Paramahangsha had also come to see her play in 1884.

Noti Binodini, the pioneer of Bengali stage and modern techniques of stage make-up, also happens to be one of the first South Asian actors from the theatre industry to have written her autobiography and her career retirement is still not clear or its reason. A play based on her autobiography, Aamar Kathaa, titled Nati Binodini was first presented by the National School of Drama Repertory Company in 1995.
