Who Is Chitra Sarwara?

Chitra Sarwara, an independent candidate in the 2024 Haryana Assembly elections, has garnered attention by taking on political heavyweight Anil Vij in Ambala Cantt, a constituency historically controlled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The daughter of former Congress minister Nirmal Singh, Sarwara decided to run as a rebel candidate after her party denied her a ticket. She had previously faced a six-year suspension from the Congress party for engaging in ‘anti-party activities,' as per ANI.

She was previously a member of the Aam Aadmi Party, led by Arvind Kejriwal, and served as the State Vice President for Haryana starting in April 2023. In January 2024, she decided to join the Indian National Congress.

Chitra Sarwara’s Political Journey

Chitra Sarwara comes from a political background that initially connected her to the Congress Party. However, after she was denied the party's ticket for the 2024 elections, she chose to run as an independent candidate. This decision led to her suspension from the Congress for six years, as her candidacy was viewed as a direct challenge to the party's official nominee, Parvinder Pal Pari, for the Ambala Cantt seat.

She started her political journey in 2013 when Sarwara was elected as an independent municipal corporator from Ambala Cantt. She joined the Haryana Pradesh Mahila Congress in March 2015, serving as State Coordinator and spokesperson. She organised a significant women's symposium in May 2015 and became Senior Vice President in 2016. Sarwara played a crucial role in establishing the All India Mahila Congress's online presence and later served as Secretary and General Secretary.

In April 2023, she became State Vice President of the Aam Aadmi Party before rejoining the Indian National Congress in January 2024.

Why Was Chitra Sarwara Suspended?

Sarwara, who sought the Congress ticket for Ambala Cantt, was ultimately denied the nomination. The Congress Party had chosen to field Parvinder Pal Pari for the seat against Anil Vij, a senior BJP leader and six-time MLA. The party stated that Sarwara's decision to run as an independent candidate against its nominee violates party policy, leading to her suspension for six years due to anti-party activities.

Your participation as an independent candidate against the Congress candidate is a clear violation of party policy."

The statement further emphasised, "The AICC has reviewed evidence of your actions, and as a result, we are compelled to take action. Consequently, we are suspending your membership in the Congress Party for a period of six years due to these anti-party activities," according to ANI.
