After giving us back to back hits Gully Boy and Kalank in 2019, Alia Bhatt is all set to kick-start 2020 with a big bang movie, Gangubai Kathiawadi which will hit the screens on September 11. As the fans, as well as the movie buffs, are waiting for the film with bated breath, makers have kick-started the promotions of the film by releasing the first look poster of Alia Bhatt as Gangubai Kathiawadi in the Sanjay Leela Bhansali's movie.
Sharing the first look poster, Alia Bhatt wrote on her Instagram account,"Here she is, Gangubai Kathiawadi."
Last year, Alia shared the news of getting a lead role in the movie on her Twitter handle and wrote, "A name you've heard a story you haven't. #GangubaiKathiawadi This one's going to be special!! Directed by #SanjayLeelaBhansali, releasing 11 September 2020."

Who Was Gangubai?
The Sanjay Leela Bhansali movie- Gangubai Kathiawadi is based on the life of Mumbai's mafia lady, Gangubai Kothewali. According to the book Queens of Mumbai written by a renowned author and journalist, Hussain Zaidi, Gangubai was born in Kathiyawada, Gujarat and was forced into prostitution by her husband. Later, she became a brothel owner who also supplied drugs and gave orders for murders. She was also known as 'Madam of Kamathipura' for her connections with the underworld. If rumours to be trusted, it is said that she was a guardian of the dons and used to give them shelter whenever they needed it.

However, apart from all these things, she was also known for her good deeds. She had invested a lot of time, money and efforts to improve the living conditions in Kamathipura and girls who were forced into prostitution. It is rumoured that she even met Jawahar Lal Nehru and spoke to him about the problems of the sex workers.
Coming back to the movie, this will be Alia Bhatt's first film with ace director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali. This movie will also mark the reunion of Ajay Devgan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali after 1999 romantic drama, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and is slated to hit the screens on September 11, 2020.
