We have seen people going crazy after making reels. They are dancing in public, creating nuisance in metros, and doing harmful stunts so that their video can go viral. In the era of making money online, a couple in West Bengal has sold their baby to buy an iPhone so that they could make reels.
The bizarre incident came to light from the North 24 Parganas district of the state. The police have identified the baby’s biological mother as Sathi and father as Jaydev. The woman who bought the kid is identified as Priyanka Ghosh.
Baby Sold In West Bengal For iPhone
The incident was reported by the neighbours of the couple when they noticed that the 8-month kid was missing. They saw that people who were initially struggling to make ends meet suddenly had an iPhone. They connected the dots and noticed that there was a connection between the baby going missing and the couple owning an expensive phone.
When the police came to investigate, Sathi told them that she and her husband had sold their son so that they could travel to various parts of the state and shoot reels. According to reports, Jaydev had tried selling their seven-year-old daughter in the past.

In July 2023, an incident was reported in Odisha in which a mother was arrested for selling her baby to a childless couple for ₹800. The father of the nine-month-old baby filed the complaint. Upon returning from Tamil Nadu, he found his daughter missing. His wife said that she was no more.
Mother Sold Newborn For ₹3 Lakh In Kerala
In April 2023, Thampanoor police received information about an alleged sale of a baby. The District Child Welfare Committee (CWC) in Kerala sent an alert to the police, and they arrested a 36-year-old woman who sold her baby four days after childbirth for ₹3 lakhs.

Couple Sold Baby For ₹80,000
In January 2022, a couple was reported to have sold their baby girl for ₹80,000 to an Asha worker in Vanasthipuram. The newborn was only a few weeks old, and the complaint was registered by her maternal grandmother who when visited her daughter found the baby missing.

Couple In UP Sold Baby To Buy Second-Hand Car
In May 2021, a couple in Uttar Pradesh sold their three-month-old son for ₹1.5 lakhs only to buy a second-hand car. In this case, the maternal grandparents of the baby filed the complaint.
If you search, you will find several cases of parents selling their kids for money and to elevate their status. In all these cases, the police consider them child trafficking. According to a report published by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, child trafficking has witnessed a decrease in the country, but it continues to be one of the heinous crimes that we no longer can overlook. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2020 data, 1,714 cases of human trafficking were registered in India and only 10.67% of them saw convictions.
