Nagaland Gets Its First Woman MP S Phangnon Konyak To Preside Over Rajya Sabha

S Phangnon Konyak becomes Nagaland’s first woman to be elected to the Rajya Sabha and the second woman from the state to be elected to either House of Parliament or the state assembly.

S Phangnon Konyak also holds the title of being the first woman to be elected to Rajya Sabha from the state of Nagaland.

Phangnon Konyak became the first woman member from Nagaland to preside over Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. The Bharatiya Janata Party leader broke yet another record last week when she became the first ever woman member of the Rajya Sabha who was chosen to be appointed to the panel of vice-chairpersons.

Phangnon Konyak also holds the title of being the first ever woman to be elected to Rajya Sabha from the north eastern Nagaland and only the second woman from the state to be elected to either house of the Parliament or the state assembly.

Konyak expressed her extreme pride and gratitude in a tweet that said, “"Immensely privileged, humbled and overwhelmed…Happy that it was a productive one with The Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Fifth Amendment) Bill, 2022, having been passed by the House.”

Phangnon Konyak noted that women were being finally given ‘respect and space in political leadership’ under Prime Minister Nrendra Modi’s leadership and also expressed her gratitude towards Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar for this opportunity being bestowed on her. Retweeting her post PM Modi called it a “very proud moment”.
