Mention the term Indian Brides and what everyone pictures is a coy girl who is all smiles, draped in traditional wear and all set to take part in rituals that span over a few days. She is the cynosure of all attention, surrounded by friends and family telling her what to do and what not to do. Everything is taken care of by them and all she has to do is wait for her prince charming to tie the knot of marital bliss. But wait a minute. What about her choices? What if she doesn’t believe in a certain ritual? What if she wants to wear green instead of red for her wedding day? Isn’t she supposed to do what she wants, since it’s her big day? Well, that’s what these badass brides are doing and we are just loving their sass as they indulge in their wedding celebrations on their own terms!
Bengali Bride Breaks Tradition, Goes Viral
The traditional ceremony of vidai in Indian weddings is a tearful farewell that’s the toughest part for a bride and her family as she leaves her house to move in with her husband. In Bengali weddings, there is a ritual of Kanakanjali where the bride is supposed to toss rice over her head while saying that she has repaid all the debts to her parents. Sounds weird no? How can a child ever repay the debts of her parents and show she is thankful for everything by tossing rice? So a Bengali bride who had the same thoughts actually went ahead and broke this tradition by saying that she can’t ever repay the debts. In a video featuring this which has gone viral on social media, the people at the wedding venue can be heard agreeing with her even as she leaves her household with a big smile on her face saying – “I’ll be back”. Her gesture was not disrespectful and rather touching so no wonder then that the video has been shared 73,000 times with over 6,000 comments and 42,000 reactions on Facebook as of now!
Well, I do agree and identify with her as I did the same at my wedding since my parents did not like this particular ritual too! The fact of the matter is that this is not a rebellion against traditions. This is about doing only what you believe in and bringing about a change in rituals that no longer matter in today’s world.

No Cheap Thrills, Just Taking Charge And Having Fun
Remember the bride-to-be dancing in a choli and shorts to Cheap Thrills? Well, Amisha Bhardwaj became an overnight sensation as girls rejoiced about what they had always wanted to do at their wedding. Have fun and be unapologetic about it. The viral video broke the norm of a coy bride who has to stand like a mannequin at her own wedding.
Even I had an opportunity to meet a pretty sassy bride who A) Arranged everything for the wedding by herself and remained totally chilled out all throughout with no Bridezilla tantrums B) Had a gala time at her wedding where she was serenading her husband in front of the in-laws! This was Bhawna Singh, a UP girl marrying a Hyderabadi guy and boy did she do it with flair! Her husband and every person who was part of the wedding ceremonies were all smiles looking at the pair and the efforts made by them to make the event a success. This goes to show that brides now want their weddings to be a truly personal affair where they have no inhibitions in being who they are.
Then there was Ayesha Upadhyay, the biker bride who made a grand entrance at her wedding riding a Royal Enfield Bullet bike that she loves. Ditching the traditional doli, Ayesha, who is part of a woman bikers group, defied all norms to create a spectacular sight.
Funny thing is when all of this is happening; we have Isha Ambani telling us that she cried at her vidaai due to peer pressure. Now that’s something that some of us have experienced too!
