Step 1

First, turn the shirt inside out to ensure any logos or designs are kept hidden. Next, lay the shirt flat on a smooth surface, making sure to eliminate any wrinkles in the fabric. Then, using a ruler, measure three inches up from the bottom of the shirt and mark a straight line across the shirt at that point using chalk or a marker.

Step 2

Grab your scissors and start cutting strips evenly spaced from the bottom of the shirt up to the line. Remember to cut through both the front and back of the shirt simultaneously. Take care not to cut the strips off the shirt, ensuring they are at least an inch and a half wide.

Step 3

Go ahead and trim off the sleeves of the shirt right outside of the seam, ensuring to keep the seam that connects the body of the shirt to the sleeves intact as it adds strength to your handles. For a larger opening, cut a deeper neckline into the shirt. You can either free-hand cut it or use half of a paper plate as a guide for your cutting.

Step 4

To secure the bottom of your bag, start by tying all the strips into knots. Grab a strip from the back and another from the front, then tie them together. Make sure to create a few tight knots before moving on to the next pair of strips. After tying up the bottom of the shirt, it might appear a bit scrunched up. Simply give both sides of the shirt a gentle tug to stretch out the bottom again.

Step 5

Turn the shirt right-side out. Your knots will be hidden inside the bag. Enjoy your new t-shirt bag!
