Surat Diamond Bourse: A Look Inside The World's Largest Office Building

On July 18, 2023, Indians felt proud as they read that Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB) in Gujarat is officially the largest office building in the world. It is titled to be the ‘one-stop-destination’ for more than 65,000 diamond professionals, including polishers, cutters, and traders.

Surat is renowned as the diamond manufacturing centre not just in India but around the world. It is considered to be home to more than 5,000 diamond manufacturers. The city is also called the ‘Diamond City’ of India.

The shape of Surat Diamond Bourse comprises nine rectangular buildings connected with a long red tunnel building with 15 storeys. The office space spreads across 35 acres of land.

According to a report published in CNN, the floor space of the building is about 7.1 million feet, making it surpass The Pentagon, the famous office space in the US, which until now was the largest in the world. 

The project is almost complete and will be welcoming its first occupants in November 2023. It took four years to complete the building, and like many other sectors, it witnessed a delay of two years because of Covid-19.
