The Kolkata rape-murder case that shook the residents nationwide, has finally made it to the courtroom of the highest judicial body of India. Considering its urgency, the Chief Justice of India, Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud opened the case files at 10:30 am on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at the Supreme Court of India, New Delhi. A three-judge bench, led by CJI Chandrachud and comprising Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, heard the details of the heinous rape and murder of a 31-year-old on-duty trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the night of August 9, 2024. "If women are not able to go to work and conditions are not safe, we are denying them equality," said the Supreme Court.
"What was the police force doing when a thousands-strong mob attacked the hospital," the court questioned.
CJI Chandrachud stated, “The state of West Bengal shall also file a status report by August 22 on the progress of investigation in the vandalism at RG Kar Hospital case.”
"Most young doctors are putting in 36 hours, we must evolve national protocol to ensure safe working conditions," said the three-judge bench.
The highest court questioned, "When the conduct of the RG Kar Hospital's principal was under scrutiny, how was he appointed to another college immediately?"
"The nation can't wait for another rape for it to take some steps. There are legislations in states to protect medical professionals but they do not address the systemic issues," spoke Chief Justice DY Chandrachud.
CJI Chandrachud said to SIbal, "There is undoubtedly an unexplained delay in the registration of FIR regarding the rape-murder incident at RG Kar hospital."
"The West Bengal government was expected to maintain law and order and protect the crime scene, unable to comprehend why the state could not do so," spoke the Justices.
