Amidst the buzz around the festival, let’s dive in and learn about the history of the festival and associated traditions.
The Story Of Onam Festival
According to mythology, the Onam festival is connected with King Mahabali and the golden era of his reign. The story is associated with the jealousy incidents of the Gods on Mahabali. In simpler words, the story revolves around Mahabali and Vamana Avatar. King Mahabali was an asura emperor who ruled Kerala. He was sensible, vigilant and a good ruler. During his reign, the people were happy and content. He reduced the corruption and crime ratio to zero and people got rid of their hardships, sorrows and ailments. His popularity made other gods insecure and Lord Vishnu stepped in and helped contain Mahabali.
Lord Vishnu took the Vamana avatar and visited Mahabali as a Brahmin. He asked Mahabali for three pieces of land and Mahabali granted his wish. As soon as his wish got granted he grew in size and and in his first and second place respectively, he covered the entire universe. However, when Lord Vishnu was about to take his third pace, King Mahabali offered his head. This act impressed Lord Vishnu and he granted him the right to visit his kingdom and his people every year during Onam festivities. Thus, the tradition of Onam festivities began.
