If you thought gloves were only meant for winter, think again! You require gloves while cleaning that dirty toilet, gardening, or colouring your hair. Gloves are used for multiple tasks, no matter the fabric. If you think making them from scratch is tricky, then believe us—it's not! Here is a quick and easy guide to making DIY gloves at home.
Material For Making Gloves From Scratch
- Old newspaper
- Fabric (latex, nitrile, or wool)
- Scissors
- Elastic bands - thin or thick, depending on how tight you prefer your gloves to be
- Sewing kit/Needle and thread/Sewing machine
- A pencil, chalk, crayons, or a marker pen
Steps To Make DIY Gloves
Step 1: To create a customised glove pattern, place your hand on a newspaper sheet. Using a pencil, carefully draw an outline around your hand, considering your fingernail length. Ensure a 1-inch gap between your hand and the drawing, particularly near the wrist. This facilitates comfortable movement and enables easy insertion of your hand. Now take the newspaper cutout and place it on the folded fabric. Trace out the hand pattern on it.
Step 2: Cut out your hand pattern from the fabric at a 45-degree angle for a smooth fit. Pin the newspaper template to prevent shifting. You'll get two hand-shaped pieces.
Step 3: Draw stitching lines along the fabric's border, tailoring margins to fit your hand size. For a snug fit, allow narrower margins; for larger sizes, increase the margin accordingly.
Step 4: Combine the two fabric pieces by stitching along the designated line. Sewing machine users can efficiently complete this step. Alternatively, manual stitching options include the backstitch or running stitch for a secure and durable seam.
Step 5: Fold the wrist area of the gloves according to the elastic band's width. Insert the elastic, trimming it to fit snugly. Secure the elastic in place with stitches.
Step 6: Your eco-friendly, handmade cloth gloves are now complete. Simply turn them right side out, and they're ready for use.
