Rangoli comes from the fusion of two words 'Rang' and 'Avalli' which loosely translates to rows of colours. The Vastu believers have a theory that making a Rangoli at home is important, especially during festivals and other auspicious occasions as it is believed to be a symbol of happiness. In relation to Navratri, the belief is that making Rangoli pleases Maa Durga.

Colour Selection

While making Rangoli near the Kalash during Navratri (Shardiya Navratri 2023: Flowers To Offer), the colours you choose are of great significance. You should opt for vibrant and bright colours. For example, the colour red is a representation of Maa Durga, and the colours orange, yellow, and green symbolize prosperity, growth, and positive energy.

While people don’t give much thought to the colour selection generally and often use black and brown colours in making Rangoli, the expert told us that these colours are not considered auspicious to be used in worship material.

Traditional Rangoli

In the beginning, people used to make the Rangolis with leaves and rice. You can make such traditional Rangoli designs. You can also add colours to the rice and leaves for an even better design. It is believed that such rangoli designs are auspicious for Mata Rani’s festival as well as for the home.

Direction To Make Rangoli

Direction holds an important position in Vastu, so, the direction in which you make the Rangoli is also important. You should keep in mind that the Rangoli must be facing the North, East, or North-East directions as they are believed to bring wealth, health, and prosperity.
