Did you notice Shah Rukh Khan dancing on a plane in Dunki’s ‘Lutt Putt Gaya’? Well, it was not a real aeroplane that someone kept on their roof. It was a water tank symbolising the dream of Khan’s character to move abroad.
SRK’s upcoming film is set in Punjab, where a group of friends use illegal ways to settle abroad and struggle to get back to their home country. In one of his #AskSRK sessions, the actor mentioned, “Dunki is a way of describing an illegal journey across borders. It is pronounced डंकी. It’s pronounced like Funky…Hunky….or yeah Monkey!!!”

Punjab is among the few states that witness a large number of people settling abroad every year. In 2021, V Muraleedharan, Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs of India, shared a report in Lok Sabha stating that between January 2016 to May 2021, 4.78 lakh people left Punjab in search of employment abroad. Much like SRK’s ‘Dunki’, villages in Punjab with artistic water tanks have a story to tell. Here are some amazing pictures.

Anil Yadav, who runs a travel blog on Blogspot, shared a few images in June 2013 showcasing how houses in rural and urban localities in Punjab (Places To Visit In Punjab) have artistic water tanks in the shape of water jugs, bulls, footballs, whiskey bottles, etc.
As stereotypically shown in many Bollywood films, whiskey is among the favourite booze of Punjabis. Therefore, the water tank represented their love for the liquor. Bulls as water tanks represent how agriculture dominates most parts of the state, and probably, the house owner was a farmer. The water jug tank symbolised the importance of water in rural areas of the state.

Uppal village in Punjab has houses featuring out-of-the-box water tanks. A picture shared on X (formerly known as Twitter (X Roll Out)) by a user shows a house with a water tank in the shape of a weightlifter. It showcases the person’s passion for the game or probably their dream to excel in the field of weightlifting.
In many houses, one can notice water tanks in the shape of animals, birds, military tanks, tractors, hens, etc. In most cases, the design of the water tank symbolises a person’s dream, passion, or occupation. Impressive isn’t it?

One of the houses in Kultham has a water tank in the shape of the Statue of Liberty. The local architect opted for this design to show the world that he aspires to visit the US someday.
Rajesh Vora, a photographer for more than 25 years, clicked a few such images while he was travelling in Punjab in 2014. His work on Photoink displays houses with water tanks in the shape of a plane, van, a kid kicking a football, etc.
