Beyond the celebrated houseboats of Alleppey and the vast tea plantations of Munnar, there exists a quieter, more profound Kerala one that invites not only your presence but also your slowness. In these far-off corners of the Western Ghats and secret island havens, the frenetic tempo of contemporary living melts away into the soothing chimes of temple bells, the whisper of spice plantations, and the ancient ways of indigenous culture. These five secret villages are not so much tourist destinations as they are time capsules in which the culture is pure, the nature is untamed, and each day is lived with a quiet and slow purpose.

5 Hidden Villages In Kerala Where Time Seems To Stand Still

1. Kanthalloor

Located in the rain shadow area of the Western Ghats, Kanthalloor is a horticultural marvel. It is the only place in South India where apples coexist with oranges, plums, and strawberries. It has a small grocery store that, to this date, practices the ancient barter system, where garlic and ginger are traded for rice and oil. You should see the extensive fruit orchards and the Muniyara Dolmens located nearby.

2. Vattavada

According to the Kerala Tourism Official Website, “Vattavada, located 42 km from Munnar, is a scenic terraced village famous for its high-altitude vegetable farming. Unlike the rest of Kerala, this village feels more like a rustic mountain hamlet with its stone houses and step-cultivation. The village maintains a unique tribal culture and agricultural rhythm that has remained unchanged for centuries. The local community remains self-sufficient through organic farming.”

3. Marayoor

Marayoor is a hidden land that holds India’s only natural sandalwood forest. It’s like a living museum where prehistoric history and local lifestyle coexist. The area is dotted with Muniyaras that date back over 3,000 years. The people of this region continue to make the world-famous ‘Marayoor Jaggery’ in their traditional sheds through hand-extraction processes.

4. Kumbalangi

Despite being close to the bustling city of Kochi, Kumbalangi is an island haven where life is centred on the backwaters and Chinese fishing nets. This village is a part of the Responsible Tourism project. There are no big hotels to stay in here; instead, you stay in homestays, learn the process of coir making, and accompany fishermen on country boats.

5. Urumbikkara

Located between Kuttikanam and Vagamon, Urumbikkara is a former plantation village that was a bustling centre of activity during British rule. Today, it is a peaceful and foggy destination for those seeking complete solitude. The village is dotted with crumbling colonial-era tea factories and bungalows that speak of a forgotten era. The place can only be accessed through off-road trails.
