Shafali Verma Becomes Youngest To Complete 1000 T20I Runs, Sets New World Record

Verma scored 55 runs off 44 balls against Bangladesh at the Asia Cup 2022 on Saturday.

Shafali Verma, India’s new teenage batting sensation, has created new world record and become the youngest to score 1000 runs Twenty-20 International runs. She scored the runs against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup encounter on Saturday, October 8, 2022, at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.

During yesterday’s match, the opener played a key role in India’s win over Bangladesh as Verma scored 55 runs off 44 balls with five boundaries and two sixes.

Verma, the seventh-ranked T20I batter in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s T20I rankings, got to 1000 runs at the age of 18 years and 253 days. With the new record, she also became the fifth Indian player to enter the 1000-plus T20I runs club breaking the record of Jemimah Rodrigues, who was the youngest until now at the age of 21 years and 32 days after playing against Australia in October 2021. The others in the club include Mithali Raj, who was the fastest to get 1000 runs in 40 innings, Smriti Mandhana, and Harmanpreet Kaur.

Currently playing for India’s women’s national cricket team, Verma began playing cricket disguised as a boy when she was a child due to the lack of girls’ cricket academies in Rohtak. Her career started by playing for Velocity in the Women's T20 Challenge in which she scored 34 runs off 31 balls. In 2019, when Verma was merely 15 years old, she made her debut in international cricket. She was named in India's Women's Twenty20 International (WT20I) squad for their series against South Africa which made her the youngest cricketer to play the same. In the same year, she also became the youngest half-centurion for India in international cricket as she scored 158 runs in five matches against West Indies and became the player of the series.

A year later, in 2020, she was named in India's squad for the 2020 ICC Women's T20 World Cup in Australia ahead of which, she was ranked as the number one batter in women's T20I cricket.

Later in 2021, Verma made her Test debut and scored 96 runs in the same against England. Later that year, she became the youngest player among both males and females to represent India in all three formats of international cricket.

In 2022, Verma was named in India's team for the 2022 Women's Cricket World Cup in New Zealand and also for the team at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.
