Despite a star cast comprising actors Saif Ali Khan and Hrithik Roshan, the recent Hindi film Vikram Vedha was a disappointment at the box office, said the former. Khan also mentioned that like everyone else in the industry, he is also clueless about why Bollywood films are not clicking with the audience at the theatres.
In a recent interview with the CNBC TV18, Khan said, “Honestly, Vikram Vedha was disappointing at the box office, in the sense that it opened and ran and everyone who saw really liked it, but philosophically looking back, the reason we should be polite to each other is because nobody has any clue what works, what doesn’t or what’s going to happen.”

Further in the interview, Khan spoke about the trend of films not working at the box office, which has led to introspection among the industry people. He also mentioned that they expected the film to do well considering its star cast but it did not turn out to be the same. “It was certain that this film, with these two guys in it, is going to open big and since it’s so well made, it’s going to run. But it was disappointing. I have no idea what’s happening. People will continue to make movies, we will continue to try, prices will keep fluctuating, because our pricing is insane– we pay people astronomically and the returns have not been good,” said Khan.
The film barely collected ₹37.50 crore nett at the box office after its first weekend and ₹80 crores during its stay at the theatres in India. As per Box Office India, the film collected around ₹10.35 crores on its opening day. However, the film received mostly positive reviews.

The film is a remake of the Vijay Sethupathy and R. Madhavan starrer Tamil film of the same name. Inspired by the Indian folktale Baital Pachisi, based on the famous Vikram Betaal, the Tamil version narrates the story of a cop (Vikram), who sets out to track down and kill gangster Vedha. The story unfolds after Vedha voluntarily surrenders himself and tells Vikram three stories that change his perception of good and evil. In the Hindi remake, Khan will be playing the cop and Roshan will be portraying Sethupathi’s role of the gangster. The film also stars Radhika Apte, Rohit Saraf, Yogita Bihani, and Sharib Hashmi in pivotal roles.
