In September, a woman’s custodial death in Iran over ‘moral policing’ of clothes shocked the entire world. Mahsa Amini was accused of violating the country’s ‘hijab laws’ (hijab is a scarf-like garment Muslim women use to cover their heads to show their devotion, but it is not meant to be mandatory). According to official reports, she was detained by Iran’s ‘moral police’, suffered a heart attack while in custody and died.
Since then, Iranian women have been protesting for their rights to bodily autonomy. Many activists, journalists, and protesters have also been detained. Some of them have been killed and buried without any information given to their families. The (Iran) protest reached a global platform when Turkish singer Melek Mosso cut her hair in support of the anti-hijab protest.
Now publicly joining the protests is Sacred Games actor Elnaaz Norouzi who is of Iranian descent. She took to Instagram to post a video in solidarity with the women fighting for their rights to wear what they want.

On October 11, Norouzi posted a video on Instagram titled ‘My Body, My Choice’. She started by taking off her burqa (a black garment that Muslim women wear to cover their bodies), and slowly, took off all her clothes until she was in a black bikini set.
The entire video had variations of the text –- “If this is your choice, it’s ok.” She conveyed the fact that whether a woman chooses to cover her body or wishes to expose a part of her body, it must be solely her choice.
She captioned the video, “Every woman, anywhere in the world, regardless of where she is from, should have the right to wear whatever she desires and when or whatever she desires to wear it.”
Norouzi added, “No man nor any woman has the right to judge her or ask her to dress otherwise.”
The actor stressed the fact that everybody has a different belief and each of them deserves respect. She pointed out that democracy means the power resides with the person to make decisions for themselves and their bodies.
She wrote, “I am not promoting nudity, I am promoting freedom of choice.”
