A Kolkata court on January 18, 2025, found Sanjay Roy guilty of the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor from RG Kar Hospital last year. The judge declared, "You must be punished," with the sentencing scheduled for Monday, January 20, 2025. The court’s verdict heavily relied on forensic evidence that linked Sanjay Roy to the crime scene and the victim, with his DNA identified in both places, as noted in the judgement.
A Kolkata court has found Sanjay Roy, a 33-year-old civic police volunteer, guilty in the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Hospital. The sentencing is set for Monday, marking the conclusion of a case that shocked the nation.
In its 160-page judgement, the Additional District and Sessions Court in Sealdah convicted Roy under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita addressing rape, murder, and causing death.
Following the verdict, the victim's father, overcome with emotion, expressed gratitude to the judge, saying, "You have given due importance to the faith I reposed in you."
Roy, escorted to the packed courtroom under tight security on Saturday, continued to claim he was being framed, despite having previously confessed to the crime. As he was led away, he alleged that a certain "IPS" officer had knowledge of the case, according to NDTV.

A 31-year-old trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered, with her body discovered on August 9, 2024, in the seminar room of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer at the hospital, was arrested in connection with the case but has denied any wrongdoing.
The crime triggered widespread outrage and protests across the nation, with junior doctors in Kolkata and other regions demanding justice and better workplace safety. The hospital's principal, Sandip Ghosh, resigned amid the unrest, while the West Bengal government transferred the hospital’s superintendent.
The protests also saw the emergence of the 'Reclaim the Night' movement, organised by women and activists advocating for justice and enhanced protection for women. However, demonstrations at RG Kar Medical College turned violent, with a mob damaging hospital property and the crime scene.
