Days after Maha Kumbh 2025 concluded, the European Space Agency recorded satellite images showing how Prayagraj changed over a month to host the largest gathering. Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission captured some of the stunning images of the Maha Kumbh held in Prayagraj that recorded the world’s largest human gathering. The event took place from January 13 to February 26, 2025, marking the occurrence of one of the rarest events that happens once every 144 years. Recognised byUNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the Maha Kumbh Mela is considered one of the most revered Hindu pilgrimages, which takes place among four sacred cities. In 2025, Prayagraj hosted one of the rarest Maha Kumbh that takes place once in 144 years. The event, centred around the cleansing ritual, attracted millions of devotees from around the world. According to the official website of the European Space Agency, the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission captured images that revealed the transformation of the Maha Kumbh area in Prayagraj. The comparison images were taken on December 13, 2024 and January 27, 2025. The images revealed the extensive infrastructure developed during the festival. Check out the images here:
Infrastructure Development In Prayagraj
To host millions of devotees during Maha Kumbh Prayagraj went through a massive transformation. According to the European Space Agency, “A vast area covering more than 40 sq km along the banks of the Ganges river was converted into a sprawling tent city, with housing, electricity, drinking water, parking lots, around 150 000 toilets and 11 hospitals. A series of floating bridges are also visible in the river, connecting the two banks of the Ganges.”
Significance Of Maha Kumbh
According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that Maha Kumbh is hosted only in those four cities where nectar from a divine pitcher has fallen. The event shows India’s rich cultural heritage and power of faith.
