The central government, led by Prime Minister Modi, has launched the second phase of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY 2.0). This scheme is designed to provide financial assistance for housing to economically weaker sections (EWS) and middle-class families living in urban areas. The Union Cabinet approved the scheme on August 9, 2024. Under this phase, the government plans to build 1 lakh new homes, with each house receiving a financial subsidy of Rs 2.30 lakh to help make housing more affordable for these families. About Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY 2.0)

Approved by the Union Cabinet on August 9, 2024, the scheme aims to construct one lakh new houses within five years, starting September 1, 2024, with a financial subsidy of Rs 2.50 lakh per house. As per the official website, “PMAY-U 2.0 is one of the major flagship programmes being implemented by the Government of India to provide all-weather pucca houses to all Eligibility beneficiaries in the urban areas. The Government assistance under PMAY-U 2.0 will be upto 2.50 lakh per unit.”

It further states that, “In pursuance of the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision, PMAY-U 2.0, with an investment of ₹ 10 lakh crore, will address the housing needs of one crore families, ensuring that every citizen leads a better quality of life. The central assistance of 2.50 lakh crore will be provided under the Scheme.”

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY 2.0) is aimed at helping 1 crore families, with a special emphasis on ensuring fairness and equal opportunities for all sections of the population. According to the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Government of India, that was released on August 9, 2024 states, “Special attention will be given to marginalised groups, including slum dwellers, SC/STs, minorities, widows, persons with disabilities, and other underprivileged sections of society. Additionally, groups like Safai Karmi, street vendors, artisans, anganwadi workers, and residents of slums/chawls will receive focused support under this scheme.”

It further stated that, “The PMAY-U 2.0 scheme is open to families belonging to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS), Low Income Group (LIG), and Middle Income Group (MIG) segments who do not own a pucca house anywhere in the country. The income criteria for eligibility are as follows:

EWS households: Annual income up to ₹3 lakh.

LIG households: Annual income from ₹3 lakh to ₹6 lakh.

MIG households: Annual income from ₹6 lakh to ₹9 lakh.”

How To Apply For Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY 2.0)

The application process for PMAY 2.0 is simple and can be completed online in a few steps. Here’s how you can apply:

Step 1: Go to the official Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) website athttps://pmay-urban.gov.in.

Step 2: On the homepage, click on the 'Apply for PMAY-U 2.0' option to start your application process.

Step 3: Now carefully read all the scheme guidelines to understand all the terms and conditions.

Step 4: Give your annual income details to check if you meet the eligibility requirements for the scheme.

Step 5: Now enter your Aadhaar number to complete the verification process.

Step 6: Fill out the application form with your personal details, including your address, income proof, and other necessary information.

Step 7: After filling in all the details, submit your completed application form and wait for confirmation.

Documents Required For PMAY 2.0 (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana) Application

Below is a list of documents that you will need to submit:

i) Full Aadhaar card details of the applicant and family members

ii) Active Aadhaar-linked bank account details with account number, bank name, branch name, IFSC code

iii) Income certificate

iv) Caste certificate

v) Land ownership documents (if you're applying for help to build on land you own)

Features For PMAY 2.0 (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana)

i) Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban 2.0 official website states, “Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban 2.0 under which financial assistance will be provided to 1 crore urban poor and middle-class families through States/Union Territories (UTs)/PLIs to construct, purchase or rent a house at an affordable cost in urban areas in 5 years starting from 1st Sept 2024.”

ii) According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, in the first phase of PMAY-Urban, 1.18 lakh houses were approved. Out of these, more than 8.55 lakh houses were completed and given to the beneficiaries.

iii) Press Information Bureau, Government of India, “PMAY-U 2.0 is designed to extend financial assistance to urban poor and middle-class families for constructing, purchasing, or renting houses at affordable costs in urban areas.”

iv) The scheme aims to construct 1 crore houses for urban poor and middle-class families over the next five years, with an investment of ₹10 lakh crore and a government subsidy of ₹2.30 lakh crore.

v) The ISS Vertical offers interest subsidies on home loans to help economically weaker sections (EWS), low-income groups (LIG), and middle-income groups (MIG) make homeownership more affordable.
