Onam is a beautiful festival celebrated in Kerala on the 1st day of Chingam Masam which marks the beginning of the Malayalam Calendar. It is also known as the Malayalam New Year. The 10-day-long celebration is also known as Kolla Varsham. Onam commemorates the homecoming of the legendary King Mahabali, according to Hindu mythology. This is also the harvest season in the state. This year, Onam starts on September 6. Making rangolis is one of the most significant ways to celebrate Onam. Organise a rangoli making competition for the kids in your family, neighbourhood, or school and let them have a fun-filled afternoon. You can categorise them into age groups, deciding themes and topics for each group. Award the best ones with something thoughtful.
Decorate Elephant Wall Hangings
Elephants are another essential symbol for the festival of Onam. You and your kids can sit together with paints, paintbrushes, sequins, glue, paper, pencils, and scissors and make elephant wall hangings. Draw an elephant on a piece of paper, cut it out with a pair of scissors, and colour and decorate it as you like. Decorate your home with these wall hangings.

Make Athapookalam (Flower Rangoli)
