Maa, mom, mother—words that rarely escape my lips. It's been twenty-two years since I graced the earth, and she departed. As Mother’s Day approaches, the void in my heart, usually filled with love from family, friends, and a sprinkle of dark humour, gets too big. Hence, jotting down my thoughts is an attempt to not only aid others but also to navigate through my own emotions.
Mother’s Day: The Void Of The Other Side
Studies suggest that infants initially believe they are one with their mothers. So never having the solace of resting my head on her chest perhaps perpetuates a certain longing within me. Having spent my first day of school, my first heartbreak, my first period, and countless other milestones without her, Mother’s Day is no different. But the looming arrival of Mother’s Day every year serves as a reminder of what I've missed.
The Different Shades Of The Other Side
It's not just me; countless others resonate with these sentiments as Mother’s Day draws near. Women who have lost children, battled infertility, or endured miscarriages find this time challenging. So, this year, extend a hug to a friend in a similar predicament or share the warmth of your mother’s embrace, if only for a day.
Mother’s Day is not solely about celebration; it's about acknowledging the complexities of love, loss, and longing. It's a day where empathy fills the void within those who revel in maternal love and those who yearn for it, reminding us of the unspoken challenges of everyone.
