National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data for 2021-2019 has been released. The data mentions that Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of criminal cases against women in 2021, while Delhi ranked first in the list of such cases among all the metropolitan cities. Delhi topped this list for the third consecutive year.
In 2021, Uttar Pradesh recorded 56,083 crimes against women. After UP, Rajasthan recorded 40,738 cases. The next city with the most crime cases was Maharashtra, which recorded 39, 526 such crimes.
Delhi Most Unsafe Metro City For Women
The national capital of India, Delhi recorded the highest number of rape cases among all 19 metropolitan cities. The city recorded an average of three rape cases every day in 2021, as per a report by the National Crime Records Bureau (NRCB).
Delhi was followed by Mumbai in the list of such crimes, which saw 5,543 registered instances. The next city after Mumbai was Bengaluru with 3,127 cases.
The national capital also recorded the highest number of cases of cruelty by husbands or relatives and 2,674 such instances were recorded in 2021. On average, over two girls were raped every day in Delhi in 2021, the data showed.
The Hindu reported that Delhi Police PRO Suman Nalwa said, “The increase in the crime rate shows that more cases are now being registered and people are coming forward with their grievances. Several safety initiatives are being carried out with women and children in mind to curb such incidents. Training sessions are also held for senior citizens to help them from falling prey to cyber frauds.”
Delhi also recorded the highest incidents of crimes against children and senior citizens in the country. 1,166 incidents of crimes against senior citizens were reported in 2021.
According to the NCRB data, the number of crimes against women grew from 56.5% in 2020 to 64.5% in 2021 (number of incidents per 1 lakh population).

Crime Against Women
The majority (31.8%) of cases classified as crimes against women under the IPC were registered under ‘Cruelty by Husband or His Relatives’. The next three were ‘Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty’ (20.8%), ‘Kidnapping & Abduction of Women’ (17.6%) and ‘Rape’ (7.4%). In 2021, the crime rate registered per lakh of women's population is 64.5 in 2021 in comparison with 56.5 in 2020.
Assam had the highest rate of crimes against women in 2021 for the fifth straight year.

Overall Crimes
A total of 60,96,310 cognizable offences were reported in 2021, according to the data. It also showed a decline of 7.6% in the registration of cases over 2020, which was 66,01,285 cases. The number of crimes reported per lakh of the population decreased as well, falling from 487.8 in 2020 to 445.9 in 2021.
A major decline in crimes was seen in the cases registered under Disobedience to order duly promulgated by Public Servant.
