Why Is Mahavir Jayanti Celebrated?
Lord Mahavir was the son of King Siddhartha and Queen Trishala of the ancient kingdom of Vaishali. However, the exact birthdate of Lord Mahavir is not known. Shwetambar Jains believe he was born in 599 BC while Digambar Jains believe he was born in 615 BC. But according to the Hindu Calendar, Lord Mahavir was born on the 13th day of the Chaitra month. At the age of 30 years, Lord Mahavir left all his worldly possessions and became a wandering ascetic in search of spiritual enlightenment. He dedicated his life to the teachings of truth, chastity, non-attachment, nonviolence and non-stealing. He preached to people that every living being should be treated with love, compassion and respect. He also taught people to live a simple, peaceful and virtuous life.
