Karwa Chauth is one of the most popular Hindu festivals. It holds utmost significance as it is believed to celebrate the bond of a married couple. Married women fast all day long and break their fast at night after seeing the moon. This year, Karwa Chauth will be celebrated on 24th October 2021.
The celebrations are incomplete without some elements like application of henna, solah sringaar and sargi. Sargi is an age old ritual which is performed on this day, especially in North India. If you don't know what sargi is, here we will tell you the significance of the pre-dawn meal.
Sargi is the meal the married woman gets to eat before the sunrise. This traditional meal has different food items that a woman gets from her mother-in-law. Sargi is mother-in-laws way of blessing her daughter-in-law on the auspicious day so that she can successfully fast through the day. Sargi helps the woman stay energetic through the day as she fasts.
Sargi is always consumed during the Brahma Muhurat which is before sunrise every year.
Sargi consists of delicious foods which can help the woman keep full through the day. Traditionally, the thali includes -
Fresh Fruits
Karwa Chauth is a nirjala vrat which means they can't drink water all day till they see the moon. That's one reason why the sargi thali has a lot of fresh fruits. Fruits have high water content. They keep the woman full and hydrated through the day.
Dry Fruits
Dry fruits like almonds, pistachios, raisins, cashew nuts are high on nutrients and provide a lot of energy to the body. Consuming them in the morning as sargi helps the fasting woman stay energetic all day.
Sweets
Traditionally, the sargi thali always has one or more sweets. These can be homemade or readymade. Sweets are rich in glucose and sucrose which fuel your body with a lot of energy for the long day.
