Why Moral Policing Of Women Still Persists In India?

We live in a “man’s world” where being a woman was already difficult, and the development one would expect to see in our society’s archaic thinking is yet to be seen. The incident that happened with influencer Shriyanshi is an example of moral policing that many women go through on a daily basis. You would think something like this only happens with women, but it starts as early as school girls being told that their skirts are too short, and it will distract boys in the classroom. Women have always been given this unfair conditioning that they need to ensure that men shouldn’t be “provoked” by their outfits. Rather than society raising men to be respectful, knowing how boundaries work or what consent means, society has deemed it a woman’s responsibility to be held accountable for things other people do.

We have also seen moral policing being more normalised through Bollywood movies and series we consume. From Neena Gupta wearing western pieces that show off skin to Mandira Bedi getting trolled for wearing jeans to her husband’s funeral, whatever the occasion is, people find a way to tell a woman how to dress.

We can only hope that the current generation grows up to be the one that makes this change in our society and minds their own business rather than moral policing of others.
