India's Priyanka Goswami Creates History By Winning Silver In 10,000m Race Walk

Priyanka Goswami won India its 27th medal at the CWG 2022 by winning silver in the women's 1000m race walk.

In a historic win, olympian Priyanka Goswami clocked in 43:38 time and finished second in the 10,000m racewalk on Saturday. She is the first Indian woman to win a Racewalking Medal at the Commonwealth Games.

Third Medal In Athletics

With Priyanka Goswami's elusive silver in the women's 1000m race walk, India now has three medals in the athletics event of CWG 2022. The other two medals are won by Tejaswin Shankar (bronze medal in high jump) and M Sreeshankar (silver medal in long jump) in the athletic category.

Priyanka Goswami's Personal Best Performance

Goswami's performance in the race with the time of 43:38 is her personal best.

Jemima Montag from Australia won the gold medal by winning in 42:34 time. The bronze was won by Emily Wamusyi Ngii from Kenya with a time of 43:50.

President of India, Droupadi Murmu congratulated Goswami via twitter. She wrote, "Congratulations to Priyanka Goswami for winning silver in race walking at #CommonwealthGames. Becoming the first Indian woman to win a medal in race walking you have opened a new chapter of achievements. Your feat will inspire millions, especially our girls."

Anurag Thakur, Union Minister for I&B and Youth Affairs & Sports, also congratulated Goswami. He tweeted, "India's wins at the Race Walking World Championships earlier this year is still fresh in the memory and with her maiden medal in CWG, Priyanka Goswami has strengthened India's presence in the discipline. Congratulations Priyanka!"
