Chandrayaan-3, the next chapter in India's space odyssey, gracefully lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, on Friday afternoon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his congratulations on Twitter, acknowledging the achievement and emphasizing the significance of this momentous launch in India's space exploration journey. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has set its sights on a remarkable goal for the Chandrayaan 3 mission – a soft landing on the moon's surface by late August. If achieved, this milestone would position India as the fourth nation in history, after the United States, China, and the erstwhile USSR, to successfully accomplish a soft landing on the lunar terrain.

What is the mission about?

The primary objective of the ISRO's mission is to accomplish what its predecessor couldn't—perform a soft landing on the lunar surface and conduct exploration with a rover. A successful soft landing would position India as the fourth nation, following the United States, Russia, and China, to achieve this remarkable feat. On Friday, the spacecraft will be launched into an orbit around the Earth at an altitude of 179 km. Through a series of strategic manoeuvres, the spacecraft will gradually elevate its orbit, effectively escaping Earth's gravitational pull and propelling towards the moon. Upon approaching the moon, the spacecraft will rely on the moon's gravity to capture it. At this stage, the lander, housing the rover, will detach from the propulsion module and initiate its controlled descent.
