Rainy days often leave us with damp shoes, which can quickly become breeding grounds for fungus and bacteria. This not only causes bad odour but can also lead to skin problems like athlete’s foot or fungal infections.
After wearing your shoes in the rain, remove the insoles (if removable) and let them air out. Stuffing them with newspaper or tissue can help absorb moisture faster. Avoid storing them in dark or closed spaces while they’re still wet.
Sprinkle antifungal powder or use a medicated spray inside your shoes once they’re dry. This helps prevent fungus and kills lingering bacteria. Products containing clotrimazole or tea tree oil are often recommended.
Don’t wear the same pair every day during the rainy season. Alternate between pairs to give each shoe time to dry out completely. If possible, keep a spare pair at work or school.

Opt for shoes made of quick-dry or waterproof materials like rubber, EVA, or mesh. Avoid suede and untreated leather, which absorb and retain water easily.
To tackle bad smell, place baking soda, used tea bags, or silica gel packets inside your shoes overnight. These help absorb moisture and neutralise odours.
Even clean shoes can smell bad if feet are sweaty or infected. Wash and dry your feet daily. Use antibacterial soap and make sure toes are fully dry before putting shoes on.
