How To Grow Garlic In A Pot

We got in touch with Swaminathan, a gardener at a nearby nursery in Dwarka, who provided us with an extensive guide on cultivating garlic in a pot:

  • Select a pot that is 8-12 inches deep and has drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.
  • Fill the pot with potting soil or a well-draining soil mix, leaving about 2 inches of space from the rim.
  • Separate the garlic bulb into individual cloves, making sure each clove retains its outer papery skin.
  • Plant each clove with the pointed end facing upwards and the flat end downwards, burying them about 2 inches deep in the soil.
  • Space the cloves approximately 4-6 inches apart to allow for adequate growth.
  • Before planting, mix organic fertiliser or compost thoroughly into the soil to provide essential nutrients for the garlic.
  • After planting, water the pot thoroughly to settle the soil and ensure the roots receive moisture.
  • Throughout the growing season, maintain consistent moisture levels in the soil; avoid overwatering to prevent waterlogging. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry.
  • Place the pot in a sunny location where it can receive full sun for 6-8 hours daily.
  • Regularly check the soil moisture and adjust watering as needed to keep the soil evenly moist.
  • Optionally, apply a layer of mulch around the garlic plants to retain moisture and suppress weed growth.
  • Garlic bulbs are usually ready for harvest when the lower leaves start to turn yellow and dry, typically in late spring or early summer.
  • Use a garden fork or trowel to carefully dig up the bulbs, taking care not to damage them during the harvesting process.
  • Once harvested, gently brush off excess soil from the garlic bulbs.
  • Allow the bulbs to cure in a warm, dry area with good air circulation for 2-3 weeks. This curing process helps the bulbs develop their characteristic papery skins.
  • Trim the roots and store the cured garlic bulbs in a cool, dry place with adequate ventilation.
  • Use the garlic cloves as needed in your cooking to enjoy their fresh flavour.
