Eid al-Fitr is finally here, meaning Muslims all over the world can now break their month-long fast and celebrate their significant religious festivities. The festival marks the end of Ramadan, the islamic month of fasting. In India, this day is also called ‘Meethi Eid’ when people break their fast by eating savoury dishes. Although the basic rituals and traditions of Eid are the same across the globe, there are some unique customs and practices that vary from country to country.

Indonesia

In Indonesia, Eid is popularly known as Lebaran, where people indulge in last-minute shopping and lightning torches through the streets a night before the festival. On this day, people enjoy bamboo cooked rice, which is locally known as Lemang, and Lapis Legit, a thousand-layer cake, are two traditional foods cooked for the day. Other food items prepared on Eid include Ketupat, opor ayam, and cookies made of butter and pineapple jam fillings.

Malaysia

Eid in Malaysia is celebrated with much zeal and enthusiasm like anywhere else. Most people travel to their hometowns to be with their families. People decorate their homes with oil lamps known as Pelita and cook traditional foods for Eid, including Ketupat or rice dumplings, and Rendang, a popular meat dish to honour guests in South East Asian countries.

Pakistan

Preparation for Eid usually commences from the second last week of Ramadan, but by the last week, the festivities are in full swing. People in Pakistan clean and decorate their home, buy new clothes, and head to market for last-minute shopping. Women go to each other’s homes on Chand raat to apply mehndi on their hands and wear colourful glass bangles on Eid day.
