Google Doodle Celebrates Singer Bhupen Hazarika's 96th Birth Anniversary

On the occasion of the 96th birth anniversary of singer and filmmaker Bhupen Hazarika, Google paid a tribute with a creative doodle.

Google on Thursday, September 8, 2022, paid tribute to singer, composer, and filmmaker Bhupen Hazarika on his 96th birth anniversary with a creative doodle. The Google doodle features Hazarika playing his trademark harmonium and was created by Mumbai-based artist Rutuja Mali.

Hazarika, who was most well-known in West Bengal and Bangladesh, is credited with introducing Assamese and Northeast Indian folk music and culture to Hindi movies. Bhupen Hazarika was presented with the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour, in 2019 by President Ram Nath Kovind. The celebrated vocalist, who was also a poet and director, was born on September 8, 1926, and he passed away on November 5, 2011 at the age of 85.

Popularly referred as Sudha kantha, which means nightingale or "nectar-throated", he had also received many significant awards like the National Film Award, Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Dada Saheb Phalke Award, Padma Vibhushan, and many other prestigious honours. He also served as chairman and director of numerous boards and associations, including the government’s National Film Department Corporation.

He was known for his baritone voice and for making music (Why You Should Make Music A Part Of Your Everyday Life) on themes ranging from romance to social and political commentary. Some of his renowned works in Assamese music which audiences still enjoy include 'Bistirno Parore', 'Moi Eti Jajabor', 'Ganga Mor Maa', and 'Bimurto Mur Nixati Jen'.

On the occasion of Bhupen Hazarika's birth anniversary, Union Minister, Amit Shah also shared a post and wrote, "I bow to Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika Ji, an amazing musician with an exceptional voice, on his Jayanti. With his versatile and mesmerising songs, he popularised Indian music & Assamese folk culture across the world. His contribution to the world of music & art is commendable."
