Giorgia Andriani Trolled For Her Short Dress; When Will This Moral Policing Stop?

Giorgia Andriani, Arbaaz Khan’s girlfriend, receives unwarranted backlash from social media trolls for wearing a short dress.

Giorgia Andriani, a model and actor in Bollywood, and also Arbaaz Khan’s girlfriend is known for her amazing fashion sense. She dazzles all her fans with her swoon-worthy Instagram posts and whenever she gets snapped in the city.

But recently, Andriani was spotted at the T-series office, wearing a blingy multicoloured outfit, which did not go down well with social media trolls because it was too short for their liking. Many netizens also pointed out how Andriani looked like Katrina Kaif.

The post has now been removed, and we wonder if the reason was the brutal trolling. A user commented on the now deleted photograph, “Aur chhota dress nahi mila kya? (You did not find a shorter dress?).” While others said she resembled Katrina Kaif and said, “Katrina Kaif is getting old…so she is a young version of Katrina.”

These comments can seriously affect the mental health of celebrities, even though some people believe celebs have to develop a thick skin in order to survive public scrutiny. But this level of harassment is disproportionately doled out to female celebrities.

Other Bollywood Women Who Have Been Trolled For Their Fashion Choices

Manushi Chillar, Miss World 2017 and the Samrat Prithviraj actor, attended the Filmfare Middle East Achiever’s Night in Dubai in a bright yellow dress with plunging neckline that featured an asymmetrical hem. While the outfit was bold and experimental, several social media users pointed out how she could easily have a wardrobe malfunction in it. A user commented, “She is looking so uncomfortable..then why force them to wear such clothes.” Others were quick to mock that her dress looks like it was made out of bedsheets and curtains.

Similarly, Nora Fatehi who is known to wear stunning outfits, was recently snapped in Mumbai wearing a stylish white dress. The dress had a knee-high slit and a deep neckline. Trolls made lewd comments on her photos, questioned her fashion choices, and even called her shameless.

The fashion diva Urfi Javed is not new to mean comments. While some support her for breaking stereotypes, others ridicule her and make sexist comments. She was recently trolled for wearing an all-black outfit inspired by Kendall Jenner’s style. Having a sheer lace top on, many questioned why the paparazzi was shooting such pictures and “promoting” it. Some went on to say that such outfits leave a bad impression on kids and should not be worn in public.

The Men Who Step Out of the Box Aren’t Spared Either

That’s not all. Male actors such as Ranveer Singh, who wears androgynous outfits and so-called feminine styles and colours, are often on the troll’s hit-list. Recently, Singh was spotted wearing an all-pink outfit at the Meta Creator Day in Mumbai, and many were not pleased with the choice of colour and started calling him the ‘Pink Panther’ in the comment section. One person called him “Urfi Ka Bhai” (Urfi’s Brother); insinuating that his dressing choice was similar to her’s and was equally ludicrous and inappropriate. One person even asked if he had raided his wife, Deepika Padukone’s closet. Somebody called him “Barbie Doll Lite”.

Singh’s charismatic and confident nature is such that he seldom pays heed to the comments and was in his usual chirpy mood.

It is high time that the public changes their mindset. Short clothes don’t define somebody’s character, and neither do ‘girly’ colours negate somebody’s masculinity. It is 2022 and we are still judging people on their clothes, which goes to show how much we need to progress as a society. Bollywood entities are human too, and most social media users often forget how these comments can mentally harm them. Society needs to revamp its regressive notions and unlearn negative stereotypes, only then will we come to a point where patriarchy can truly be abolished.
