India is gearing up for the international space race. The success of the Chandrayaan-3 Mission has fueled up the Indian Space Research Organisation and they are all ready to launch Gaganyaan Mission soon. Gaganyaan is going to be the first crewed Indian space mission in which astronauts will fly to low-Earth orbit. In a recent visit to Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, PM Modi announced the names of the four deserving astronauts who will be part of this mission. Ahead of the Gaganyaan Mission launch, let’s dive to know about the mission details.
After the success of the Chandrayaan-3 Mission, the Indian Space Research Organisation is gearing up for a new project which is named the Gaganyaan mission. This is ISRO’s human spaceflight programme aimed at sending humans to space. The project aims to launch a crew of four astronauts into low earth orbit and bring them back safely to Earth. However, before sending humans into space, the test missions will be conducted which include the Integrated AirDrop Test, the Pad Abort Test, and Test Vehicle flights to ensure everything works well.
Prime Minister Modi has announced the names of the four astronauts who will be the crew members for the mission. Group Captain Prashanth Balakrishnan Nair, Angad Prathap, Ajit Krishnan and Shubanshu Shukla have been selected to be the astronauts for the Gaganyaan Mission. They are all either wing commanders or group captains in the Indian Air Force (IAF) and have extensive experience working as test pilots. These members are already trained to be prepared to respond quickly in situations where something goes wrong. However, the astronaut training facility established in Bengaluru will ensure physical training, simulator training and flight suit training of the astronauts.
Gaganyaan Mission is named after the Sanskrit word for vehicle to the sky. The project has been developed at the cost of ₹90 billion.
