As Diwali approaches, many of us find ourselves asking: how many diyas should we light to maximise the festival's blessings? Is there a specific number that holds significance? The answers often lie in the realms of tradition, astrology, and personal intention. This year Diwali will be celebrated on 31 October 2024. During Diwali Lord Ram, Goddess Lakshmi, and Lord Krishna, along with Lord Ganesha, Lord Kubera, and Goddess Saraswati are worshipped.
Let’s explore how the number of diyas can affect the energies in your home and life during this auspicious time. To know more on this topic we consulted Jyotishacharya Radhakant Vats who told us how many diyas should be lit on Diwali and in which direction:
Diwali, known as the Festival of Lights, symbolises the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. Lighting diyas is not just a ritual; it’s a way to invite prosperity, happiness, and spiritual awakening into our lives. Traditionally, homes are adorned with these small oil lamps, each representing a flicker of hope and positivity.
On Diwali, it's a lovely tradition to light seven special diyas to bring prosperity and joy to your home. Here’s what you can do: You can light one diya in front of Lakshmi and Ganesh, light one for your favourite goddess or god, place one in the kitchen, light one in the bathroom, put one at the main entrance of your house, light one near the Tulsi plant, and light one on the roof. These seven diyas are important for the celebration. You can also add as many other diyas as you like around your home to enhance the festive atmosphere.

On Diwali, make sure to light a ghee lamp in front of Lakshmi and Ganesh, as well as your favourite god or goddess. Use a cotton wick for the ghee lamp to enhance the auspiciousness of the ritual. For other areas in your home, it’s also considered good to light mustard oil lamps with a cotton wick. This adds to the festive atmosphere and invites blessings into your space.
So, light your diyas with love and hope, and let their glow illuminate your path in the coming year. Happy Diwali.
