After facing an imprisonment of more than a month, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal was finally granted interim bail by the Supreme Court in the liquor policy case. According to the SC, the bail is applicable until June 1, 2024 after which he must surrender to authorities again. Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21, 2024.
This marks the first time a sitting Chief Minister has been arrested. As per reports from Business Standard, the ED has summoned Kejriwal nine times in multiple cases, including the excise policy scam and the Delhi Jal board case. However, Kejriwal had turned down all summons as 'illegal' and 'politically motivated'.
The lawsuit, as per ANI, revolves around money laundering and corruption during the formulation of the excise policy by the Delhi government, which was subsequently abandoned. With assets valued at more than Rs 128 crore attached, the ED has so far issued six charge sheets. The charge documents contain several references to Kejriwal, and the agency claims that he was involved in creating the policy for unfair benefits.

Can Kejriwal Govern From Jail?
It is practically unfeasible for Kejriwal to govern from jail. However, there exists no legislation that prohibits a Chief Minister (Maharashtra Makes Mother's Name Mandatory On Government Docs) from continuing their governance until a conviction is secured. In this instance, Kejriwal has not faced conviction. Under the Representation of the People Act, 1951, a conviction is imperative for disqualification. This insight was shared as per Times Now.
