When Apple launched the MacBook Neo, the company positioned it as a more affordable entry in the MacBook line of devices. While the word ‘affordable’ remains a relative term, especially in countries like India, the Neo still comes at a lower price point than the other MacBooks in the laptop line. However, people considering the Neo may also look at older devices like the MacBook Air M2, which retailers often sell at a discount.
Since both devices now sit in a similar price range, choosing between them can feel confusing. Let’s take a closer look at the similarities and differences between these two devices.

The Apple MacBook Neo starts at ₹69,900. Buyers who need more storage can purchase the 512GB version of the laptop for ₹79,900.
Apple originally priced the MacBook Air M2 at ₹99,900. However, retailers now offer the device at a lower price because of various discounts and offers. Buyers can currently purchase the laptop with 16GB RAM and 256GB storage for around ₹70,000, which places it in direct competition with the Neo.
Both devices offer lightweight and portable designs, which makes them ideal for students and working professionals who travel frequently.
Apple builds the MacBook Neo using recycled aluminium, and the device weighs around 1.23 kg, slightly lighter than the MacBook Air M2. The MacBook Air M2 features the familiar premium aluminium MacBook construction along with the signature display notch.
When it comes to display quality, the MacBook Neo features a 13-inch Liquid Retina Display with support for sRGB colours. The MacBook Air M2 features a slightly larger 13.6-inch Liquid Retina Display with support for P3 colours, which delivers richer and more vibrant visuals.
Performance marks one of the biggest differences between these two machines.
Apple equips the MacBook Neo with the A18 Pro chip, the same processor that powers the iPhone 16 Pro series. The device includes 8GB RAM and up to 512GB storage, although users cannot upgrade the RAM later.
The MacBook Air M2 runs on the Apple M2 chip and often appears in the market with 16GB RAM and 256GB storage at around ₹70,000. Both machines support the latest macOS 26 software and include Apple’s AI features.
For everyday tasks such as browsing, watching streaming videos and handling routine work, the MacBook Neo performs well. However, users who work with heavier software, demanding applications or multiple tasks at once may find the MacBook Air M2 a better option.
The biggest drawback of the MacBook Neo is the absence of certain features that usually come with the MacBook family of laptops. For example, the MacBook Neo does not include a backlit keyboard or the Force Touch trackpad feature. Apple only includes Touch ID with the 512GB variant of the MacBook Neo, which may discourage some potential buyers.
The MacBook Air M2, on the other hand, includes all the features commonly found in the MacBook family, including Touch ID across all variants. The MacBook Air M2 also features a quad-speaker system, while the MacBook Neo includes a dual-speaker setup. As a result, the MacBook Air M2 delivers richer sound quality.

In terms of connectivity, the MacBook Neo offers fewer options, including two USB ports and one headphone jack. The MacBook Air M2 provides more flexibility with MagSafe charging and two USB-C/USB 4 ports.
Battery performance also differs between the two devices. The MacBook Air M2 supports 67W fast charging, while the MacBook Neo supports 20W charging due to its smaller battery.
If you want the most affordable way to enter the MacBook ecosystem and only plan to use the laptop for basic productivity tasks, the Neo may suit your needs.
However, if you can purchase the MacBook Air M2 for a similar price, it becomes the better option. The M2 Air delivers noticeably stronger performance and better sound quality, making it a more versatile choice for most users.
