With the deaths of some of the most notable stars to the controversy sparked off by the untimely demise of Sushant Singh Rajput, the Bollywood industry is going through a rough patch currently. The debate about nepotism always existed, but, the young actor’s death has provoked rage among his fans, who are now questioning the established filmmaking families and the production houses, taking to social media platforms. However, the debate has taken an ugly turn, with celebrities receiving death and rape threats.
After Sonam Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha, Alia Bhatt’s sister Shaheen Bhatt opened up about what she and her sister is going through. On Monday, the actor’s sister took to social media and revealed that they have been receiving some of the most disturbing threats and abuses on social media. On her IG story, she posted a few screenshots of messages received by her or perhaps her sister and wrote, “Does this surprise you? Why? It does not surprise me.”
A writer by a profession, Shaheen shared some alarming statistics that stated that a woman in this country is raped every 15 minutes. She further talked about facing a dilemma about addressing this issue on social media and was it worth the effort, but she realised, “if I believe that the world should be a place in which women can feel safe and exist without being constantly threatened, sexualised or subjected sexist/misogynistic slurs with the sole intent to humiliate them - if I believe women should be treated like HUMANS. Then that’s a world I have to help create. And in order to create that world I have to draw boundaries in my own life and pursue action no matter how annoying or time consuming or downright sad it is.”

The member of the Bhatt family thereafter explained what will be her course of action towards those, who will be sending her of her sister, Alia Bhatt hate messages going forward. “The messages or comments will first be blocked and reported to Instagram directly. - You will forfeit the right to your privacy. I will NOT protect your identity. Every sh**ty message you send me will - should I choose to - go up for everyone to see,” read her Instagram post.

“Abusers are emboldened by their anonymity. I will not help hide you. - I WILL use all legal recourse available to me to take action. If you think you can’t be located because your account is anonymous, please think again - IP addresses are easily trackable. You are not invisible. Harassment is a crime,” she added.
Alia’s elder sister also pointed out that changing the way one uses the platform is not the solution to stop such threats and compared this idea to encouraging the mentality that states, women should not step out at night to protect themselves from getting assaulted. “To Instagram- you have zero tolerance policies for a lot of the content that people put up on your platform. But if you don’t want to receive abusive message turn off your message requests `Tired of being called a b*tch in your comments? Turn off your comments. Asking me to change the way I use a platform because of someone else’s hatred and misogyny is the equivalent of telling me that if I go out at night and get assaulted ‘I was asking for it’. I should not have to change the way I use a platform if someone is being abusive. They should. Full stop,” she concluded her post.
While some are supporting Shaheen and expressing anger against the people, who spread hate, others are still calling out her family. “I'm posting this image just to tell to those people that you have a monster inside you and you all are showing fake concern just to tell everyone that what happened was not good. These people are giving rape threat to @aliaa08 and #ShaheenBhatt Shame on these monsters Pouting face,” tweeted one. “@aliaa08 #ShaheenBhatt you are right harassment and bullying are both crime but pls remember it applies to all ! So before u gang up on anyone remember ur own rule,” said another.
