Caution! These AI Driven WhatsApp Video Calls Are The New Fraudsters In Town

With the inception of the newest technologies, we are gradually becoming more and more vulnerable to the drawbacks that technology brings with it. Technology is heading in such a direction where a human’s contribution onwards operating it has started to decline. This is where AI or Artificial Intelligence comes into play. 

AI is the latest technological trend. It is a technology with which man-made intelligence is inculcated in the computer’s brain and can be used for a lot of things including content generation and now even fraud!

As we are heading towards a future where technology barely needs human intervention, things are gradually getting out of hand. AI was devised to make human work a lot easier but is now widely being used for maleficence. Here’s how it is being used to create fraud WhatsApp calls and scam you disguised as your loved one. 

How Does AI Help With Fraud?

Artificial intelligence comes in extremely handy when it comes to creating content or code which is mostly synonymous to what a human mind can formulate. AI’s functions were to contribute to human work but with its advancement, many individuals have started using it for illegal activities. This includes pretending to be your loved one to extract money from you illegally or some private detail.

AI has been a key tool lately for conducting money laundering through WhatsApp video calls. The fraudsters who use AI-driven video calls would call you from an unknown number. The face of your loved one appears on the call; it could be a friend, parent, relative or even your partner. With AI, they can also match up their voice with your loved one’s. After this, they are most likely to ask you for either money or bank account details.

Recent Cases That Occurred 

Numerous cases have come to the notice in Delhi in the last month itself. Cyber Crime Advisor of Delhi Police, Kislay Choudhary has stated that there are fraud WhatsApp (How To Recognise WhatsApp Scam) video call cases where a woman was asked by the caller in disguise of her husband for ₹2 lakh while, another case where someone was asked by an individual for ₹85,000.

IIT Kanpur’s organisation the Future Crime Research Foundation (FCRF), has investigated that about 18 per cent of these calls are being made from Bharatpur, Rajasthan, followed by Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura.
