The first teaser of the upcoming pan-India mythological film Adipurush starring Prabhas and Saif Ali Khan was unveiled on Sunday, October 2, 2022. The teaser of the much-awaited film, however, kicked off a meme fest on social media along with mixed reviews on the VFX quality of the film. While some compared the film with a ‘cheap’ version of the epic television series Game of Thrones, Marvel films, and the Android game Temple Run and other cartoons, some talk about the portrayal of Raavan by Khan.

“Dear #OmRaut, You’ve maxed your OTT subscription by marrying #GOT, #HarryPotter, #PlanetOfTheApes and #ZeeHorrorShow for your #Ramayan remake. Insulting to see the pukish trailer of #Adipurush. And where did you get that bat from? Wuhan?” wrote one user on Twitter.

While another wrote, “I guess the makers of #Adipurush know that Ravan was king of Asuras and not the head of the world Dracula association. #AadiPurush #SaifAliKhan”

“#Adipurush teaser looking like sasta Game of Thrones. Seriously those Ameerpet grads could do a better job. And what's with all the GOT fixation in costumes, settings. Didn't expect this from Om Raut,” another tweet went.

Directed by Om Raut, the National award-winning director and the maker of Tanha Ji: The Unsung Warrior, Adipurush is based on the Hindu mythological epic Ramayana. The bilingual film shot in Telugu and Hindi travels 7000 years ago when Ayodhya's king Raghava travels to the island of Lanka. With the help of Hanuman's army, Raghava aims to rescue his wife Janaki, who has been abducted by Lankesh, the king of Lanka.

Prabhas plays the role of Raghava (Lord Ram) and Kriti Sanon plays the role of Janaki. Khan plays the role of Lankesh along with Sunny Singh as Lakshmanaa, and Devdatta Nage as Hanuman. The film also features Vatsal Seth, Sonal Chauhan, and Trupti Toradmal. The film is a modern adaption of the epic using modern technologies and VFX with a budget of around ₹250 crores. The film is slated to have a theatrical release on January 12, 2023.

The film is also facing boycott on social media and has been slammed by a Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson and actor Malavika Avinash for alleged ‘misrepresentation’ of Ramayana. Madhya Pradesh Home Minister and BJP leader Narottam Mishra also warned the film’s director of legal action if “objectional scenes” are not removed from the teaser. He said, “There are objectional scenes in teaser. Lord Hanuman is shown wearing clothes of leather. Such scenes hurt religious sentiments. I am writing to producer Om Raut to remove such scenes. If he doesn’t remove, we will think about legal action.” Amidst the meme fest on Twitter, netizens have also compared Raavana’s look with Alauddin Khilji and gave it a religious angle.
