In today’s hyper-connected world, moving on from a relationship isn’t as simple as deleting a number or blocking a contact. With social media keeping us connected in ways we don’t always choose, the healing process can be messy, drawn out, and confusing. Deepti Chandy, Therapist and COO, of Anna Chandy & Associates, shared five signs that indicate that you might not have moved on from your past relationship, even if you think you have.
5 Surprising Signs You Haven’t Moved On Yet
Here are the signs that indicate you haven’t moved on:
You're Still Stalking Them Online
Deepti highlighted that in today's modern age, this is often the first red flag. If you find yourself regularly checking your ex’s stories, scrolling through their feed, or digging into who they're following or hanging out with, it’s a strong sign you haven’t emotionally let go. Social media has made it almost impossible to avoid digital echoes of our exes, but constant surveillance only prolongs the grief.
You're Stuck Replaying The Past
According to Deepti, if you catch yourself going over old conversations, situations, or moments — wishing you could have said something differently or done something better — that’s another indicator you’re still holding on. This is classic emotional bargaining — a stage of grief: "If only I had said that... maybe we’d still be together." If these thoughts are frequent, you're probably still emotionally invested.
They Live In Your Present Thoughts
Deepti mentioned that thinking of your ex in the present tense — what they’d do, say, or think if they were around — shows they’re still very much part of your internal world. If they keep coming up in conversations with friends, family, or even at work, it's a sign they’re occupying more headspace than they should.

You Struggle To Engage In New Experiences
Whether it’s a holiday, a concert, or just a dinner out, if you're constantly thinking, "I wish they were here," or "This would’ve been perfect with them," you’re not fully living in the present. Fantasizing about what could have been can anchor you to the past and prevent you from opening up to new experiences or people.
You’re Fixated On Their Life, Not Yours
If your thoughts are consumed by what your ex might be doing, who they might be with, or what they're feeling — you're still emotionally entangled, highlighted Deepti. This kind of fixation often keeps you from focusing on your healing and growth.
