A milkshake is a sweet beverage made by blending milk, ice cream, and flavorings or sweeteners such as butterscotch, caramel sauce, chocolate syrup, fruit syrup, or whole fruit into a thick, sweet, cold mixture. Milkshakes were invented in 1885 and were first served with whiskey. By the early 1900s, milkshakes were served with ice cream. In 1922, the blender was created specifically for creating milkshakes. The world's largest milkshake was 6,000 gallons, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. The modern milkshake was born in 1922, when an employee at a Chicago Walgreens, Ivar “Pop” Coulson, was inspired to add two scoops of ice cream to malted milk.
Milkshakes got their name from being served in bars. If the customer enjoyed the milkshake, he shook hands with the bartender. If not, the bartender didn't get a tip.
