Having guests over always comes with the question of what to serve. You don’t always want to make heavy fried snacks or spend hours in the kitchen. That’s where Makhana Bhel Puri comes in. It’s the perfect snack for evenings, small gatherings, or even when you want to enjoy something different with your cup of tea. The best part is that it takes hardly 15 minutes to prepare, needs very basic ingredients, and is much healthier than fried starters.
Makhana Bhel Puri is a modern twist on the traditional Indian bhel puri. Instead of relying only on puffed rice, this version uses roasted makhana (fox nuts or lotus seeds) as the main ingredient. Makhanas are a popular fasting snack in India because they are light yet filling. They are rich in protein, fibre, calcium, and antioxidants, making them a healthy choice for everyone, including kids and older people.
By combining roasted makhana with puffed rice, crunchy onions, tangy tomatoes, spicy green chillies, boiled potatoes, and flavourful chutneys, you get a snack that’s crunchy, tangy, and refreshing in every bite. The sev garnish adds that final crisp texture, making it irresistible.
Here’s a simple 5-step recipe that you can make anytime:
In a pan, heat 1 tsp oil and add the makhana. Roast them on low heat for 5–6 minutes until they turn crunchy. Stir continuously so they don’t burn. Once done, keep them aside.
