The story of this romance drama follows Bhooma (Rashmika Mandanna), who moves to Hyderabad for her college to pursue her M.A. in Literature. Their sweet relationship slowly takes a toxic turn.

At first glance, you might think that Rahul Ravindran’s ‘The Girlfriend’ is just your typical love story, but it is not. The movie talks about how relationships that start full of love can end up being toxic.
In this romance drama, we see Bhooma (Rashmika Mandanna) living her best college life with her handsome boyfriend, Vikram (Dheekshith Shetty) . They are living in the honeymoon phase of their relationship and Bhooma doesn’t realise how her happiness would soon be gone. As their relationship progresses, Vikram starts getting more controlling and possessive over Bhooma. Their sweet romance turns bitter as Vikram starts treating Bhooma less like a girlfriend and more like a possession he owns. He tells her what to wear, whom to talk to and has taken full control of her life.
Bhooma soon begins acting for her college and realises how she had been acting all her life and finally feels free on stage. In the climax of the movie, we get to see Bhooma finally taking the stand for herself, from her boyfriend and her father. She finds the courage to break through the vicious cycle she was stuck in for years. At the end, we see Bhooma focusing on her career and thriving. As the credits roll, we see Bhooma begins writing again, finally returning back to her true self. The writer within her which was once silenced by love, is finally able to speak.
