‘Sinners,’ the latest film from ‘Black Panther’ director Ryan Coogler, continues to draw attention for its innovative approach to filmmaking, right down to its end credits. According to industry reports, Coogler includes a special acknowledgement to filmmaker Christopher Nolan, thanking him for critical advice regarding IMAX technology implementation.
This acknowledgement highlights a significant technical achievement, ‘Sinners’ is reportedly the first feature film to utilise both IMAX 65 and 70 mm cameras in combination. This technical milestone aligns with Nolan's well-documented advocacy for 70 mm film cameras, particularly the IMAX format, which he continues to champion for his upcoming project ‘The Odyssey.’

Coogler Reveals Nolan's Mentorship at Trailer Event
During a promotional trailer event earlier this year, Coogler elaborated on the collaboration with Nolan and his wife Emma Thomas, who also serves as Nolan's producing partner. The ‘Sinners’ director explained how their expertise proved invaluable when working with premium formats.
"I got advice from Christopher Nolan and Nolan's wife and producing partner Emma Thomas, who are masters of the form. It was our first time working with large-format photography. We were doing something that hasn't been done before, combining Ultra Panavision, which is 2.76:1, very wide, with the full frame IMAX film," Coogler revealed at the event, as reported by ComicBook.com.

Nolan's IMAX Innovation Sets Industry Standard
Nolan's guidance carries significant weight in the industry. Beyond his acclaimed directorial work, Nolan has established himself as a leading advocate for premium theatrical formats. His commitment to pushing technological boundaries was further demonstrated when he developed a new type of IMAX film specifically for his historical drama ‘Oppenheimer.’
This dedication to format innovation made Nolan's technical consultation particularly valuable for Coogler as he navigated the complexities of combining multiple premium formats for ‘Sinners.’

The film itself features Coogler's frequent collaborator Michael B Jordan in a challenging dual role, alongside an ensemble cast including Hailee Steinfeld, Delroy Lindo, Omar Benson Miller, Jack O'Connell, and Lola Kirke.
‘Sinners’ tells the story of two brothers (both played by Jordan) who return to their Mississippi hometown from Chicago with plans to open a juke joint with their cousin Sammie (Miles Caton). Their entrepreneurial ambitions are derailed when a vampire attack disrupts their plans, setting the stage for a narrative that interweaves supernatural horror with themes of Black history and racism while paying homage to blues music.
The film's commercial performance has been notable, with reports indicating it has generated approximately $61 million at the global box office.
