Diljit Dosanjh, the Punjabi singer who recently stunned the world with his performance at the Coachella 2023, is currently gearing up for the release of Imtiaz Ali’s upcoming biopic Chamkila. The film, also starring Parineeti Chopra, is set to release on the streaming giant Netflix.
The film is inspired by the life of Punjabi singer Amar Sing Chamkila. Let’s take a look at the life of the singer and how he became an inspiration for the film.
Who Is Amar Singh Chamkila, Inspiration For Imtiaz Ali’s New Biopic
Born as Dhani Ram in 1960 in a family belonging to the Chamar community in the village of Dugri near Ludhiana, Punjab, the singer adopted Amar Singh Chamkila as his stage name as he began his career in music. Chamkila began his career partnering with the female vocalist Surinder Sonia who pushed Chamkila to record his first debut album. The pair later went on to record eight duets and released the album Takue Te Takua in 1980.

Chamkila’s songs comprised lyrics which were boyish and suggestive but made fluent commentaries on extramarital affairs, alcohol and drug use.
Later, Chamkila paired with singer Amarjot Kaur and made another album together. The couple's popularity expanded not only among Punjabis living overseas but even within the province itself. It was said at this time that Chamkila was booking more shows than his peers. During its study, the biography Awaz Mardi Nahin by Gulzar Singh Shaunki discovered that Chamkila had done 366 shows in 365 days at the height of his fame.
In his short music career of less than a decade, Chamkila has nearly recorded 100 songs and around 200 remained unrecorded.

Chamkila was assassinated in March 1988 as he arrived to perform in Mehsampur in Punjab where both Chamkila and his wife Kaur were gunned down. No arrests were made and the case remained unsolved.
Several conspiracy theories began making rounds around his killing including a militant attack, professional rivalry or ‘honour’ killing as a fallout of his marriage to Amarjot.
