It was ‘Everything’ at the Academy Awards 2023 ‘All At Once’. The showstopper film and cast not only won seven Oscars across categories but won our hearts as well through their winning speeches.

The critically acclaimed American absurdist comedy-drama film Everything Everywhere All At Once with a largely Asian cast won the Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor (both male and female), among others. The 95th edition of the Academy Awards was all the more memorable for India as we brought home two Oscars with the Best Documentary Short Film The Eelephant Whisperers (directed by Kartiki Gonsalves and produced by Guneet Monga and Achin Jain), and Best Original Song award was bagged by Naatu Naatu (the song composed by MM Keeravani from the SS Rajamouli directed RRR).

As the winners held their Oscars tight and made history on the way, they delivered some powerful speeches that are bound to give you goosebumps or as Jake Peralta says ‘Ah, Chills! Literal chills!’

Michelle Yeoh

The Malayasian actor who began her career in the 80s and rose to fame in 90s,starring in films like James Bond franchise’s Tomorrow Never Dies and Star Trek, won an Oscar at the age of 60. Her winning speech was addressed to little boys and girls who looked like her and also mentioned ageism. “For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities. This is proof that dream big, and dreams do come true. And ladies, don’t let anyone ever tell you you are past your prime. Thank you to the academy, this is history in the making.”

Ke Huy Quan

Born in Vietnam, the 51-year-old American actor Ke Huy Quan, popular from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, won an Oscar for the Best Supporting Actor for Everything Everywhere All At Once this year. While he won one of Hollywood’s top honours, his happy tears letting his mother know about winning it in his speech won our hearts. “My mom is 84 years old and she’s at home watching. Mom, I just won an Oscar! My journey started on a boat. I spent a year in a refugee camp. And somehow I ended up here on Hollywood’s biggest stage. They say stories like this only happen in the movies. I cannot believe it’s happening to me. This – THIS – is the American dream.”

“Dreams are something you have to believe in. I almost gave up on mine. To all of you out there, please keep your dreams alive. Thank you so much for welcoming me back.” Expressing his gratitude and love for his wife, he said, “I owe everything to the love of my life, my wife, Echo, who month after month, year after year for 20 years told me that one day my time will come.”

Jamie Lee Curtis

The double Golden Globes winner American actor and producer Jamie Lee Curtis is one of the most prolific actors of the horror and slasher genres. She finally won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for Everything Everywhere All At Once this year. In her speech, she expressed gratitude towards her fans for loving her genre movies. “To all the people who have supported me in all the genre movies I have made over the years, the thousands and hundreds of thousands of people, we just won an Oscar together! And my mother and father, who were both nominated for Oscars in different categories – I just won an Oscar!”

The Daniels

Everything Everywhere All At Once is directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, who are collectively known as the Daniels, and they won the Best Director award for the film. Receiving the award, Daniel Scheinert said, “We want to dedicate this to all the mommies of the world … to my mum, thank you for not crushing my creativity when I was making weird horror movies and dressing in drag as a kid, which is a threat to nobody, by the way!”

Addressing his son while receiving the award, Daniel Kwan said, “You rearrange my DNA everyday. You should never have to live up to this standard. This is not normal. This is kind of crazy. I will love you no matter what. There is greatness in every single person. Thank you so much to everyone who has unlocked my genius.”

Brendan Fraser

The Canadian-American actor Brendan Fraser, popular from George of the Jungle and The Mummy trilogy, won the Oscar for Best Actor for his film The Whale. In his winning speech, teary eyed, he said, “So this is what the multiverse looks like! … I’m grateful to Darren Aronofsky for throwing me a creative lifeline and hauling me aboard the good ship The Whale. That was written by Samuel D Hunter who is our lighthouse. Gentleman, you laid your whale-sized hearts bare … It is my honour to be named alongside you in this category.”

MM Keeravani

As composer MM Keeravani received the award for Best Original Song for Naatu Naatu from the Telugu film RRR, he said “I grew up listening to the Carpenters and now here I am with the Oscars.” [Sung to the tune of Top of the World]: ”There was only one wish on my mind. … RRR has to win, pride of every Indian, and must put me on the top of the world.”
