Although the Maldives is well-known for its one island, one resort concept, the real magic can often be found in the local islands and atolls that have been untouched by tourism. The Maldives Ministry of Tourism reports that the Maldives is increasingly turning to local tourism to highlight the Maldivian way of life. Here are five hidden gems that you have probably never heard of before.
Fuvahmulah is an atoll with a unique tectonic formation, unlike the flat coral atolls common in the Maldives. It has freshwater lakes and dense tropical forests. It is one of the few destinations in the world where you can go for a shark dive with seven different species of rare sharks in one day, including Tiger Sharks, in a very controlled and eco-friendly manner.
Situated in the Baa Atoll (a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve), Fulhadhoo is frequently mentioned by travel experts as having the most beautiful beach in the Maldives. With a local population of less than 300, the island is a peaceful haven. The majority of the island is an uninhabited jungle and beautiful beach, giving it the feel of a private island at a much lower price tag. You can go night snorkelling to witness the bioluminescent plankton without the crowds of other popular islands like Vaadhoo.

For people who believe that the Maldives is all about its beaches, Utheemu in the Haa Alif Atoll is the place to go for a historical experience. This is the birthplace of Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu, who freed the Maldives from the Portuguese occupation. It is home to the Utheemu Ganduvaru, a 500-year-old wooden palace that is in pristine condition.

Although South Ari Atoll is famous for its marine life, Dhigurah is a local, peaceful alternative to the busy resorts. It is one of the few spots in the world where it is possible to see whale sharks throughout the year. The island tapers down to a breathtaking sandbar that extends for kilometres into the blue ocean.

At the southern tip of this archipelago is Addu Atoll, which has a history unlike any other part of the Maldives. It was a secret British Royal Air Force base during WWII. The islands are all connected by a series of causeways, which makes it possible to explore the atoll by bicycle, a unique experience in this island country.
