Sridevi’s ‘English Vinglsh’ left us awestruck with its unique concept birthed by society’s shackles. In a world where women have forever stayed tight-lipid about their needs and wants, Gauri Shinde gave these silent oppressions an amplified voice.
‘English Vinglsh’ challenges the age-old atrocities that homemakers and mothers have been bombarded with as it deviates from the usual representation of normalising such mistreatment.
Ahead of Mother’s Day 2024, let us discover how Shashi’s inspiring journey of learning English has a deep-rooted purpose of finding herself.
Silence And Suppression
Shashi, played by Sridevi, is an ideal homemaker and mother character who cooks, cleans, takes care of her family, and never complains. Despite many taunts and disrespectful comments being thrown at her by her husband and children for not knowing English, her lips stay put despite quivering. From her daughter being shamed of her to her husband casually commenting, “She was born to make laddoos,” we can see how the faulty mentality of society begins at home.
Shashi’s Loveless Marriage
Every woman desires to have a partner who can add ecstasy to their life. Shashi ends up married to a man who not only braves her of basic love in a marriage but also the quintessential respect. In the scene where they go shopping in a mall, her husband Satish hugs a female colleague which puts Shashi in an awkward position asking if people only hug their acquaintances and not their wives.

Shashi’s Quest For Learning English
Shashi visits the United States of America for her niece’s wedding, two weeks before the festivities’ commencement. She utilises this time to secretly attend English classes in a stranger city where she finds herself in a different light. She meets a batch of vibrant and positive people, including her teacher who for a change calls her an “entrepreneur” (TV Shows For Entrepreneurs) and not just another homemaker.
Shashi Attaining Self-Love
After several classes when she finally learns basic English speaking and reading, her confidence levels surge. After Laurent expresses his feelings towards her, she also realises that she is worthy of love. Even though she does not leave the dry marriage for someone new who values her, she ensures that her family will never disrespect her going forward.
