Embarking on a journey through the lens, Parveen Saini, a trailblazing filmmaker, invites us into her world where storytelling takes centre stage. Born out of a love for tales and a deep appreciation for the emotional tapestry woven by films, Parveen's cinematic odyssey began as a personal quest for creative expression. As we delve into her experiences, Parveen shares the triumphs, hurdles, and unwavering spirit that propels her as a female force in the world of filmmaking.
What Inspired Parveen To Become A Filmmaker?
As a reserved and introverted individual, Parveen found solace in the world of tales and films during her school days. These narratives became a window to understanding emotions on a larger canvas. The dinner table at home became a hub for creative exchanges, where her family shared anecdotes, offering enriching insights into society and surroundings.
She said, “When I enrolled in my masters degree in mass communication, I started studying films instead of just watching them and I felt that this audio-visual medium is the best way to tell my storiesl. And this was when I decided to be a filmmaker and this is the time when I left my job and dedicated myself to becoming a filmmaker, a storyteller.” Leaving her job, she learnt video editing, explored documentary filmmaking, and mastered scriptwriting. Alongside like-minded peers, Parveen co-founded 'Kinoscope Films,' her Film Production House.
Encouraged by her brother, she took the directorial reins for 'Kishtein,' a screenplay addressing dowry and domestic violence, gaining recognition. The year 2022 marked her foray into acting in films produced by her house, a thrilling experience. With appearances in eight Haryana-made films, Parveen is now dedicated to refining her skills, both in front of and behind the camera, continuing her captivating storytelling journey.

Challenges Faced By Parveen Saini

Devoid of industry connections and a mentor, the prospect of translating ideas into reality seemed daunting. However, Parveen navigated this hurdle by assembling a dedicated team, recognising that filmmaking thrives on the collaborative efforts of passionate individuals unified by a common goal.
Another one of the many challenges that exist for women in general is securing funding and investment for projects. She added, "This kind of gender bias is very implicit and subtle and makes it more difficult to even work with. Registering my production house with my team has enabled me to work in a much smoother way. I can work on my ideas without limiting my creative vision, however funding remains a major obstacle for all independent filmmakers."
